Storico e geografo nato a Mappershall nel Bedfordshire da Thomas Salmon, musicologo, e Katherine Bradshaw, figlia del Presidente dell’High Court of Justice che nel 1649 giudicò Carlo I. Viaggiatore infaticabile, visitò in lungo e in largo il continente europeo, visse per qualche tempo sia nelle Indie Orientali sia nelle Indie Occidentali e, negli anni 1739-1740, accompagnò George Anson nel suo giro del mondo. L’eccezionalità delle esperienze vissute si riflettono nelle descrizioni delle innumerevoli località contenute in The universal traveller, or a Compleat Description of the several Nations of the world (London, 1752-1753, 2 voll.), o nella sua opera maggiore Modern History, or the Present State of all Nations (London 1739, 3 voll.). Salmon  pubblicò inoltre numerosi saggi e pamphlets di contenuto cartografico, storico, morale, politicio Tra questi: A Review of the History of England, as far as it relates to the Titles and Pretensions of four several Kings, and their Respective Characters, from the Conquest to the Revolution (London 1722); A Critical Essay concerning Marriage... By a Gentleman (London 1724); The Chronological Historian, containing a regular Account of all material Transactions and Occurrences, Ecclesiastical, Civil, and Military, relating to the English affairs, from the Invasion of the Romans to the Death of King George I (London 1733); A New Geographical and Historical Grammar, with a set of twenty-two Maps (London 1749).
